When I paint on canvas, I usually make rough drawings and color sketches and often comps in mixed media. Sometimes I paint spontaneously with no drawings or sketches, I simply wing it and other times I make a very rough drawing in India Ink over Charcoal, or Wolf Pencil or Conte' crayon. However, in Watercolor or mixed media I make very specific and highly detailed drawings and rough comps and more finished comps* in color and/or black and white. I always under-paint using the accepted process of the Old Masters on my oil, tempera, acrylic paintings, in one or more of the following media, following in descending order of frequency: oil, acrylic, tempera, pastel, watercolor, or digital image transfers of my sketches, and/or photos of my models.
