Professor Emeritus Peter Bagnolo prefers to paint the human figure, especially beautiful women, children and men enjoying adventures and sharing love and affection. He does however, paint an occasional landscape, seascape, or still life, but most often as a background or foreground for his figure paintings,
"STYLE"
THE ESSENCE OF "STYLE & TECHNIQUE"
In the above matter, "Style and technique" Professor Emeritus Peter Bagnolo, prefers being Maverick to being a follower.
"I like to vary my approach depending on subject matter, use and my assessment of the best approach. I do not always paint loosely/painterly, or with a palette knife.
My favorite painters are many. At times I like the, thick, bold, broad, slashing brush strokes, with minimal blending, ala Brangwyn, Sargent, Fechin or Sorolla, obviously not nearly as well as the above named artists, but at other times I like, smooth, creamy, well blended painting. How I paint is determined by subject matter, media, and format.
I do not copy the style or technique of others, but I have been influenced by many of the painter's whose work I admire and among them are a good many illustrators who later became painters.
"I prefer to experiment constantly, with color, approach, style, technique-brush work, shade, shadow, or no shade, shadow, brightness, thick palette knife impasto, or thin, finely blended, Trompe L´oeil. The media in which I paint or the subject matter, or my own feelings dictate how and what I paint. (Mural, easel painting, on wood, or cotton canvas, or linen canvas or board or wood panel, oil, water color or mixed media, all present different challenges and approaches.)
"Nor do I make distinctions between Illustration and "Fine Art." I entertain no such hypocritical snobbery. Good art is, good art. The finest art I have seen has come from those who were BOTH illustrators and Fine Artists. Some of America's greatest painters started out as illustrators and visa-versa."
I like equally to paint fantasy scenes and I like the idea of muses (or angelic inspirational beings) of every description. These can be mythological muses or guardian angels, or patron saints or ancestors alone or mingling with people either seen or unseen. The bulk of my paintings are by commission often for private homes and more often for churches and institution, private billiard rooms or game rooms and large scale paintings or other art for churches, public buildings as well as corporate art.
How do I work? I always begin with thumbnail ink or pencil or watercolor small-scale sketches, then when satisfied, depending on the size, complexity, and media, I pose, light, and photograph my models (usually my wife, myself and friends and often professional models when the budget is sufficient for them) and then I proceed from the sketches and photos to larger scale art. When doing work created for commissions or for my private collections, I often make mixed media preliminary paintings, which I keep for private sales almost exclusively for new collectors. When I draw I always strive for a certain kind of realistic anatomical perfection, and when I paint, my brush strokes are rapid and vigorous. For the proper ambiance, my studio is adorned with the paintings or reproductions of my favorite artists for inspiration.
